A Witness to Cataclysmic Events
The most striking feature of Stevns Klint is the K/T boundary, a thin layer of clay rich in iridium, a rare element found in meteorites. This layer marks the end of the Cretaceous Period and the beginning of the Paleogene Period, a moment in Earth's history when an asteroid impact triggered a global catastrophe.
Around 66 million years ago, a massive asteroid struck Earth in what is now the Gulf of Mexico, unleashing a shockwave that reverberated across the planet. The impact resulted in a towering dust cloud that blocked out sunlight, plunging the Earth into darkness for months. This prolonged darkness caused widespread environmental disruption, leading to the extinction of about 75% of all plant and animal species, including the mighty dinosaurs.
